August, the middle of the Summer, sunny days from dawn ’till dusk and increasing hours of darkness as the month slowly draws to a end. For many people it’s holidays and day’s off work relaxing and socializing with friends, it’s a good job you planted those autoflowering seeds back in early Spring, the buds will be mature in the early weeks of this month, offering a mouth-watering selection of tastes, high’s and aroma’s.
During the beginning of the month your feminized and regular plants will still be in their main vegetative stage, growing and developing profusely. The shoots will stop sprouting outwards from the main-stem in symmetrical two’s, and instead, begin to stagger up the main stem, as well as along the lateral branches, ready to form cola’s.
Northern States still enjoy long hours of sunshine, with daily averages at the beginning of the month between fifteen hours, decreasing to approximately thirteen hours by the end of the month. Temperatures range between 58 – 84 degrees, day-to-night on average.
Southern States have warmer temperatures, usually between 65 – 95 degrees day-night on average, but enjoy less hours of natural daylight, with around fourteen hours at the start of the month, reducing to just under thirteen hours by the end of the month, just on the cusp of activating the flowering process.
Bugs and mites are prevalent in many areas at this time of year, so be extra vigilant and inspect the undersides of leaves, looking for any signs of nutrient deficiencies before they become a concern. It’s natural for the plant to shed leaves, especially those from the lower and underside of the canopy and isn’t cause for alarm.
However, any discoloration on the upper leaves and shoots is often a warning sign that all is not well, and should be investigated further. Refer to the chart below for many of the most common issues and deficiencies.
Unfortunately, an overdose of one particular nutrient can often lead to the plant displaying the signs of a lack of another, especially when too much Nitrogen is given to the plant. The best advice regarding feeding is that if you started with a good quality soil, many of the nutrients are already embedded, adding more won’t produce healthy, vibrant plants, only harm them.
Always follow the advice given on the nutrients you use, often reducing the quantity slightly. Unfortunately both the temperature in the North and daylight hours in the South are now against us in our multiple autoflowering seeds harvests, and after the first weeks, it’s too late in the year to plant anymore auto’s outdoors, and expect a healthy, worthwhile crop.
However, those we planted back in Spring, and at regular intervals since, are now beginning to mature and are ready to harvest, many from the start of the month. Remember, autoflowering seeds don’t rely on the reduction of daylight hours to ripen, maturity is built into their genetic, biological clock, and will occur naturally, regardless of the amount of hours of daylight or darkness it receives, and now they are ready!!
