Growing Cannabis In Washington

Washington is the eighteenth largest State in America with an area of 71,362 square miles. A population of approximately seven million people make it the thirteenth most inhabited state, with around sixty percent of people living in the Seattle metropolitan area.

Washington state legalized the consumption, use and sale of cannabis for recreational purposes for all consenting adults back in 2012, and since then it’s residents have enjoyed the freedom to use cannabis without fear of prosecution. However, unlike many of the other cannabis friendly states, Washington doesn’t allow the growing of cannabis seeds without a state licence, not even a plant or two. So providing yourself with a personal supply will require some stealth planning. Medical users with a written recommendation from a physician can grow up to fifteen plants, but only for specific conditions.

With it’s relaxed views, growing cannabis seeds in Washington should be easy. A good average temperature throughout the Spring and Summer, and up to fourteen hours of daylight per day, help the plants achieve maximum growth before the light reduces in September to begin the flowering process.

However, as growing cannabis seeds in Washington is considered a felony unless you are growing under medical exemption or state registered licence, you really don’t want to get caught, and growing the plants in your home or on your property could be risky.  With large areas of open land, forest and parks, ‘guerrilla-growing’ styles are a far safer option, for both the small, individual grower, and especially the larger commercial ‘cash-crop’ growers.

Growing Cannabis In Washington….. Fast

Past seasons have seen many people growing cannabis in Washington, and this year will be no exception. Germinating the seeds in the early Spring and planting them once the final frosts have disappeared, the seedlings would grow and flower throughout the season into the Fall. The gradual reduction in daylight would mature the plants during the beginning of October, and they would hopefully be ready to harvest before the first frosts, or cold night air destroyed the buds, wasting much of the plants yield.

The main problem with growing cannabis seeds outdoors in Washington was the onset of the cold weather before the plant had time to fully mature. With the majority of hybrid strains requiring approximately eight weeks to fully flower, and longer for the more Sativa dominant strains, achieving peak ripeness before the weather became too cold and moist was a gamble, and many buds, cola’s and entire plants have been lost to the first frosts of the year.

Cannabis has been grown in Washington for hundreds of years, originally the seeds would be planted and as the days shortened and the plants displayed their sex, the male plants would be removed to avoid early pollination. By superior and selective breeding, marijuana seed companies were able to create and develop new strains with enhanced traits and characteristics, one being the creation of feminized seeds.

While regular seeds can produce either a male or female plant, feminized seeds are devoid of all male chromosomes, guaranteeing female-only cannabis plants, eliminating the need for sexing and increasing the total harvest per area by only growing female plants. Feminized seeds were a revelation for both hobby and ‘cash-crop’ cannabis growers in Washington, and became the most popular form of cannabis seeds purchased. However that has began to change over the last few years, with the introduction of autoflowering seeds.

Like feminized seeds, autoflowering cannabis seeds only produce female plants, but unlike both regular and feminized seeds, they aren’t dependent on the reduction in light hours to begin flowering. Instead it begins almost as soon as the plant becomes established, and over the next ten weeks the plant will grow, flower and fully mature automatically, regardless of the number of hours of darkness it receives.

Feminized Seeds

Many growers prefer feminized seeds as they guarantee female-only plants. often new growers don’t realize that cannabis plants are either male or female. While they both share the same characteristics in vegetative growth, once flowering begins, they become totally different. The female plants produce the buds and cola’s cherished by smokers, while the male’s only role is to produce pollen for fertilization and seed creation. The average grower finds male marijuana plants a waste of time and effort, and so buying feminized cannabis seeds eliminates the chances of growing males, producing only female plants.

Regular Seeds

Until the creation of feminized seeds during the early 1980’s in Amsterdam, all seeds were produced naturally and known as regular seeds. Capable of producing either a male or female plant, regular seeds are the preferred choice for breeding and cloning. The males are selected for their pollen, while regular female plants make superior cuttings and clones. Autoflowering Seeds

The most recent addition to the cannabis growers arsenal, autoflowering seeds are almost always feminized, producing fast, automatically flowering plants that require no set hours of darkness to bud, ripen and mature. Unlike regular and feminized seeds, autoflowering seeds are governed by age, rather than photo-period, with the plant’s fully mature after approximately ten weeks from germination. A perfect choice for novice and outdoor growers, producing good quality harvest in the fastest possible time from seed.
