Any new hobby or vocation requires learning a set of new skills. Sometimes these skills can be learnt quickly, others take longer. One of the best ways to learn how to grow Marijuana is to avoid many of the common Cannabis growing mistakes made by others.
Many people believe that growing Cannabis and Marijuana is easy, after all it’s just a plant, and they are right. Growing Cannabis is easy as long as you avoid making the common Cannabis growing mistakes that many inexperienced growers make.
As an inexperienced Cannabis grower you will at times make mistakes, the art of learning to grow Cannabis successfully is to recognise what mistake has been made, and what course of action you should take to rectify it.
Learning from your own mistakes, and those of others can help you gain experience, making growing Cannabis easier and more successful with each crop.
Common Cannabis Growing Mistakes
Loose Talk Costs Plants
Before they have even germinated a seed, some people have already told a close friend or two that they are setting up their own grow. Others have been known to brag about it before even bringing in a successful harvest.
Telling anyone puts your operation at risk. You may trust your friends, but what if one of them mention it to their ‘trusted’ friends, do you trust them as well? They may mention it to someone else at a later time, not realising they are putting you, and the crop at risk from robbery or the police, do you want to take that risk?
The safest way to guarantee the security of your crop is to tell no-one.
Starting Unprepared
Growing a successful harvest of high quality Cannabis buds is the end product of months of work and preparation, and achieving this means putting in the work.
This starts right at the beginning, selecting the right seeds for your needs, whether you’re growing indoors or outside, the equipment you will need and the plants requirements for light, nutrients and other environmental issues.
Getting the correct advice and researching which Cannabis seeds grow well in the environment you are providing is the key to success. Poor Quality Cannabis Seeds
To many inexperienced growers, buying Cannabis seeds may seem like a cost that can be reduced. Sometimes they can be found in bags of weed, or perhaps a friend collected some from some plants they grew.
Either way, these seeds will be of poor quality. They may germinate and grow into a plant, but will the plant be female, as only female plants produce buds, will the buds be of a reasonable quality, or will they lack density and THC.
No experienced Cannabis grower uses low quality seeds. All the effort, time and money used to grow a successful crop would be wasted unless you are guaranteed the Cannabis seeds you plant will produce the high quality Cannabis buds you want.
Using The Correct Soil and Nutrients
A Cannabis plant uses a variety of nutrients during different stages of it’s development. While in vegetative growth, the plant will require high levels of Nitrogen to help it build the stems, roots and leaves. Once it begins to flower, higher levels of Phosphorous and Potassium are necessary.
If you are growing your Cannabis plants indoors, selecting the right growing medium and nutrients to grow a successful grow will depend upon your knowledge of what your plants will need, and what nutrients are in the soil to begin with.
Whether you are growing indoors or outside, checking the pH level of the soil, and maintaining it at approximately 6.0 will assist in the uptake of nutrients by your plants.
Overfeeding and Incorrect pH
Overfeeding Cannabis plants with too many nutrients, or too high a dosage is a very common mistake made by new growers. Often they believe the plant will only absorb what it needs and they can never have too much. Others follow a general feeding pattern for plants, which can be too high for successfully growing Cannabis.
During the plants vegetative stages it will require high levels of Nitrogen, but if the soil is of good quality, especially freshly purchased soil from a grow shop or garden centre, then adding more Nitrogen when feeding could well overdose the plants, causing Nitrogen burn, detrimental to growth.
Testing and maintaining a correct pH level is vital in allowing the plant to uptake any nutrients it requires. Whether indoor or outdoor, soil or hydroponics, the correct pH level will assist in growing healthy plants. Cannabis plants grown at the wrong pH will appear sickly and very slow to grow.
Incorrect Pots
Unless you are growing hydroponically, or outdoors in well prepared soil, you are probably going to grow your Cannabis plants in pots or some form of container. There are two basic rules when choosing a pot or container, firstly ensure it has adequate drainage from the base, and secondly is it big enough?
Some growers elect to grow their plants to a reasonable size in smaller pots, prior to re-potting them into their larger, final pots later. Others plant directly into large pots almost from germination. The general rule is to ensure there is always adequate room for the roots to grow and they do not become root-bound.
As the roots grow much faster than the shoots and leaves, inexperienced Cannabis growers can often overlook the fact the roots are poking out from the bottom of the pot. This is a sign the pot may be too small. Remember the larger the plant, the more room it will require for the roots to grow.
Over And Under Watering
Many inexperienced growers tend to know if they have under-watered their plants. Several days will have passed without them being watered, the leaves and stems are drooping and the soil is baked hard. It’s pretty easy to spot under-watered plants.
However, to ensure this doesn’t happen to them, many new growers over-water the plant, especially if it’s been planted into a large container. If the plant is small and still growing into it’s pot, it’s better to water just around the centre, allowing the soil to dry out slightly towards the edges.
This allows the roots vital oxygen which they can only absorb through the roots. If all the soil in the pot is damp it can make it harder for the roots to push through and develop, as well as depriving them of the necessary oxygen. This in turn leads to over-watering symptoms and slower growth.
Incorrect Pruning
Pruning Cannabis to obtain maximum growth and yield is down to experience and personal choice. When performed correctly it can seriously increase the overall yield from both an individual plant, and an entire crop. However, too much pruning can stress the plant, reducing yield, obtaining the correct balance is vital.
Pruning covers a number of aspects from removing leaves and shoots, through to entire branches. Learning which to leave and which to remove often comes down to experience. Removing the upper-most tip will result in multiple heads forming, but it will also increase the amount of vegetative time the plant requires.
A common myth is to remove all the large fan leaves, and while there is a correct time to do this, it’s vital to remember these are the stored sugar reserves of the plant that will be used to build the next generation of shoots and leaves, and without them the plants growth will be reduced.
Harvesting Too Early
A very easy mistake made by many new growers is harvesting their Cannabis too early. After a couple of weeks germinating and sprouting, four or so weeks of vegetative growth, two weeks of pre-flowering followed by weeks of flowering, their Cannabis plants are almost ready, but they cut too early for maximum effect.
Harvesting even a few days too early can reduce the overall yield, potency, aroma and flavor of the weed, costing you weight and reducing the THC levels. However that doesn’t mean that waiting longer increases these factors. Once they reach peach levels they begin to depreciate, Changing the high to a heavier stoned and reducing flavor.
If you followed our previous advice and bought high quality, stable seeds, especially those recommended by us here at USA Cannabis Seeds, you will have already been told how many days the plant requires to reach peak maturity. If not check the trichomes, when they turn from clear to milky, peak maturity has been reached. See all our Cannabis seeds for sale.
